Identifying episodes of Bullseye

Part 4. Bullseye's oche mats, desks, and name badges.

On this page, we will continue to see the differences between the series of Bullseye:
Oche mats
Quiz desks
Name badges

Oche mats

There was a range of different oche mats in Bullseye. The following picture shows the oche mats throughout the different series:

Series 1 had a dot on the floor. Series 2 and 4 had the same mat as each other (5 lines). Series 3 and 5 had the same mat as each other (3,1 lines). Series 6, 7, 8 all had unique mats (3 lines, 1,3 lines, 2 lines). Series 9, 10, 11, 12 had mats with a single white line at the very end. Series 13 and 14 had the single white line indented slightly. If you can remember any of these, you will be much better at identifying series.

The quiz desks

The desks for the quiz contestants varied over the course of Bullseye, and they are useful for telling one series from another.

Series 1: The only series when the desk is blue.

Series 2:

Series 3: Occasionally, the circles behind the contestants are upside down (with the left side over the right side). Bulb-ended microphones.

Series 4: A much richer yellow than before. Straight microphones.

Series 5: Long thick microphones like Mini Milk icecreams.

Series 6: Completely new design. From this series onwards, the quiz desk resembles a control centre or a DJ booth. Three lines of blue neon. Orange ball-shaped buzzer lights. Thin long microphones.

Series 7: Same as series 6.

Series 8: Three blue neon strips in a hazy-glass, metal framed, rectangular enclosure. The front of the desk is now blue, whereas previously it was a sort of cream colour.

Series 9: Same as 8.

Series 10: This differs from the pre-"hazy glass rectangles over blue neon" desks because the desk is blue, and the neon lights are blue-yellow-blue. The microphones are bulb ones. The neon strips on the left and right are diagonally staggered - on the left, the top one is set back from the next, which is set back from the next. The opposite is true on the right.

Series 11: This desk has a thick black top. The buzzer lights are set into the top, instead of being above it. The ends of the neon lights on the left and right are pretty much aligned vertically. There is what looks like crumpled foil around the bases of the columns. The foil occurs in series 11, 12, 13 and 14 (which are also all the series with black and red floors). There is also a thick base around the desk - this base only occurs from this series onwards.

Series 12: This differs from series 11 as the buzzer lights are on top of the desk. It differs from series 10 as each buzzer light is enclosed by a black frame. There are no obvious microphones, other than the lapel mics on the shirts of the contestants. The neon lights are pretty much aligned vertically.

Series 13: The neon lights on the left are aligned diagonally. The top one is to the left of the next, which is to the left of the next. This resembles the desk in series 10, but it differs because in this series: the right hand neon ends line up with each other. There is foil on the bases of the pillars. The buzzer lights are enclosed by black borders. There are no visible microphones (apart from the lapel ones). The desk now has a thick base - the thick base appears from series 11 onwards. The lack of microphones is something that occurs in series 12 onwards.

Series 14: This is the same as series 13, as usual.

Bullseye name badges

In every episode of Bullseye, there were three colours of name badge to distinguish the competing pairs: red, blue and yellow. In the entire run of Jim Bowen Bullseye, there were four different types of name badge: rosette, round, square with smaller text, and square with bigger text.

In series 1 of Bullseye, the name badges had a throwing Bully picture with a white section underneath. The names of both players in a pair were written on each badge by hand. There were rosette tails underneath. This design only appears in this series.

In series 2, the name badges were circular. The names of both players in a pair were printed on each badge. Circular badges only appear in this series.

In series 3 to 10 inclusive, there were square badges with rounded corners. The name of just that player was printed on the badge.

In series 11 to 14 inclusive, the badges were the same as in series 3 to 10, but the text was in a larger, clearer font. The height of the text filled the available space.
